Our story
Within Amsterdam UMC, many clinicians and scientists are working on a wide range of rare diseases - or relevant technologies - without always being aware of each other's knowledge and expertise. In addition, the care of individual patients is often fragmented. Patients see different healthcare providers at different times, delaying diagnosis and treatment. As healthcare professionals, we want to offer our patients personalized care and a healthy future.
In 2021, the heads of the departments of pediatrics and human genetics asked us to establish a new interdepartmental center at Amsterdam UMC. The goal of this new center is to combine scientific and clinical expertise provide better and faster help to the individual patient with a rare genetic disorder. The starting point is a transdisciplinary collaboration where the child and the family are central to addressing the unmet medical need.
Emma CPM
In 2022, we launched the "Emma Center for Personalized Medicine" with the aim of accelerating and innovating translational research and care. In the same year, sector funds from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science were allocated by the Board of Amsterdam UMC to the theme of clinical and translational research, and specifically to "personalized medicine". This included the following considerations:
- Create peace and space for young talented scientists and teachers to fully focus on the content of their scientific research and teaching.
- Working together to address bottlenecks in the treatment and care of rare genetic diseases.
- Educate the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers and inform society about personalized medicine with appropriate resources and clear communication.
The Emma CPM is a center of expertise at the Amsterdam UMC focusing on patients and families with a rare genetic disorder.
A collaboration between the Emma Children's Hospital, the Department of Human Genetics, the Laboratory of Genetic Metabolic Diseases, and various departments and laboratories.
